Coffee table book chronicles Ateneo’s 150-year history

Behind the glory of the blue and the white, Fabilioh, and the academic prestige attached to the name, the Ateneo de Manila has a rich history that goes back all the way to 1859, when the university we know today was the public primary school Escuela Municipal de Manila, established and run by ten Jesuit priests and a Jesuit brother.

The years that followed have included at least two wars, a massive relocation to the vast Loyola Heights area, several changes in government administration, countless national struggles, and milestones in the academe, the arts, and athletics. Yet, through all these, the Ateneo stayed true to its mission of educating generations of men for others, leaders and visionaries -- Lux In Domino (Light in the Lord) -- who have figured in many ways in the building of our nation.

All these inspiring struggles and triumphs are chronicled in the coffee table book, 150 The Ateneo Way. Ateneo’s rich history, based on official documents and personal journals and accounts from the Jesuit archives, is shared through the colorful narrative written by history professor and archivist of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus, Fr. Jose S. Arcilla, S.J., and edited by Alya Honasan and Krip Yuson. The stories are made even more alive by the priceless and mostly never-been-publicly-released photos from the university archives and the collections of Ateneo alumni, some of whom will be honored as they join in the coming Sesquicentennial festivities.

Truly a collector’s item, the book, which took three years to produce, is bound to go beyond enchanting its readers with the stories it reveals because the years encompassed runs almost parallel to the country’s development. One such moving account is when Father (Padre) Faura went to the azotea of Ateneo, overlooking the park where Spaniards were about to execute Jose Rizal, one of the institution’s great alumni. “He heard the shots, and…,” Father Arcilla says then motions with a finger slowly pointing down from his eye to his cheek.

Cultural Show Theme: "Traversing Fil-Hispano Relations"

The contests are open to all bona fide students of ages 16-24 years old:

Contest Theme: "What Fil-Hispano Friendship Means to Me"

1. Individual Essay Writing in Three Languages (English, Filipino and Spanish)
Essays that individually analyze and describe Fil-Hispano relations. Also, essays from any academic discipline and personal essays are most welcome. Using a modified MLA in the citation of sources, please use in-text citation and end notes for annotations, explanations, cross references, etc.

Please submit your articles on or before June 12, 2009, in one of two ways:

2. Extemporaneous Speech and Solo Singing Contests:
The contests will be held on June 26, 2009, from 9:00am-12noon at Aldaba Hall, UP Diliman. Pre-screening of contestants will be held on June 15, 2009.

For the extemporaneous speech:
The speech can be either in English and/or Filipino.
Criteria for judging are as follows: content 50%, organization of ideas 30% and stage presence 20%.

For the solo singing:
The song must be an Original Pilipino Music (OPM) pop song. Songs can be either in English and/or Filipino. Criteria for judging are as follows: musicality 50%, stage presence 10%, audience impact 10%, appearance 10% and song relevance 10%.

The prizes for every contest are as follows:
1st Prize – P5,000
2nd Prize – P3,000
3rd Prize – P2,000

Dr. Lourdes Diáz-Trechuelo, who died in Seville last year, set a milestone in Philippine historiography in Spain when she wrote Arquitectura española en Filipinas (1565-1800) in 1959. She had since then published other scholarly works on the same topic. In 2006, the Philippine government recognized the significance of her contribution to Philippine historiography with a Presidential Medal.
