Philippine Historical Association 2010 Annual Conference and 55th Founding Anniversary
MANILA, Philippines – In celebration of its 55th Founding Anniversary on September 18, 2010, and National History Week (September 13-18, 2010), the Philippine Historical Association (PHA) opens its 2010 Annual Conference at the GSIS Museum in Pasay City, with the theme “Sining sa Pagtuturo ng Kasaysayan.” The event seeks to share creative ways of teaching history in the classroom through the use of art, identify works of art that may be used in the teaching of history in the Philippines, and facilitate collaborative work in the use of technology in the production of instructional materials in history.
Among the topics to be discussed are: Popularizing Philippine history; revisiting recent controversial issues on the national hero, flag, and anthem; historiographic case study of the Obando Shrine in Bulacan; the Palawan example of teaching local history; using film and other visual art, public art, epic, music and dance, and technology in teaching history; and Tagalog poetry before 1571. Participants who are teachers from public and private elementary and secondary schools nationwide, will have a tour of the Ayala Museum.
The PHA, or the Kapisanang Pangkasaysayan ng Pilipinas, is a professional association of historians in the Philippines. It was founded on September 18, 1955, by a group of prominent historians. It is affiliated with the National Historical Institute, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and the Philippine Social Science Council. It is a founding member of the International Association of Historians of Asia.
There is so much of our country’s history that is woven in its artistic masterpieces – in our local literature, in architecture, in our music and dances, and in our films. The conference hopes to make the learning of history more interesting and more comprehensive, by equipping the participants with creative ways and innovative tools for teaching.
We congratulate the Philippine Historical Association led by President Dr. Evelyn A. Songco, Officers and Members, on the occasion of the Philippine Historical Association 2010 Annual Conference and 55th Founding Anniversary. We wish them all the best and success in all their endeavors.
