PHA holds national conference on teaching the Rizal Course, December 11-12


As part of the celebration of Rizal Month this December, the Philippine Historical Association (PHA) will hold a national conference on teaching the Rizal Course on 11-12 December 2015 at the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Intramuros, Manila.

The conference aims to gather historians, history teachers and Rizal Course instructors to share ideas, researches and strategies in teaching the Rizal Course as part of the general education curriculum in the higher education level.  

Prof. Wensley Reyes (Philippine Normal University) will speak on Reflective Teaching and the Ideals of the Rizal Law; Dr. Vernon Totanes (Ateneo de Manila University) on Rizaliana Online;  Ms. Gemma Cruz Araneta (Rizal Family) on Si Rizal bilang Kapamilya (Anak, Kapatid, Bayaw, Tiyuhin); Dr. Augusto De Viana (University of Santo Tomas) on Revisiting “Controversial Issues” on Rizal’s Life and Heroism; Dr. Jose Victor Torres (De La Salle University Manila) on A La Juventud Filibusteros (A Re-examination of Jose Rizal’s Second Novel El Filibusterismo);  Jonathan Balsamo (Museo Valenzuela) on Dis-Kursong Rizal: Pagkukumpara at Pagsusuri ng mga Silabo sa Kursong Rizal; Dr. Evelyn Songco (University of Santo Tomas) on Use of Active Learning in Teaching Rizal Course. Prof. Michael Charleston Chua (De La Salle University) and Prof. John Ray Ramos (Far Eastern University Diliman) will facilitate the tour of Rizal Shrine/ Fort Santiago on the second day of the conference.

Registration fee is 1,500 pesos which covers conference kit, meals and tour of Intramuros/Fort Santiago. PHA members are entitled to 10% discount. Interested participants must submit their accomplished registration form or confirm their participation on or before December 8, 2015.

PHA holds 2015 Independence Day Colloquium


The Philippine Historical Association (PHA) will celebrate the 117th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence with a colloquium to be held at Arch. Leandro Locsin Hall, The National Commission for Culture and the Arts NCCA, Intramuros, Manila on June 13, 2015. The theme for the said event is 'Independence and Legacy.'

The experts that will give their respective lectures are the following: Prof. Kristoffer R. Esquejo of UP Diliman will talk about the Life and Legacy of Historian Gabriel F. Fabella in relation with the Declaration of Philippine Independence Celebration. Dr. Emmanuel Franco Calairo of DLSU- Dasmarinas will explain General Emilio Aguinaldo's rightful place in Philippine History. Prof. James S. Guidangen from Kalinga Apayao State College will discuss the Cordilleran Experience of celebrating Independence Day. Dr. Evelyn A. Miranda of UP Diliman will examine the relevance of Tydings-McDuffie Act to the Filipino's aspiration for independence. Lastly, Mr. Ian Christopher B. Alfonso of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines will share the experience of Project Saysay in promoting lessons in history through popular means.

Previous colloquia were held at Aguinaldo Shrine, Kawit, Cavite (2007); Casa Real Shrine, Malolos, Bulacan (2008); National Historical Commission of the Philippines, Manila (2010); University of Batangas, Batangas City (2011); Kalinga Apayao State College, Tabuk City, Kalinga (2012).

Invitation to the International Conference on "Historical Education in Asia: Issues and Challenges" on August 27-29, 2015 in Manila



In collaboration with the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, the Philippine Historical Association (PHA) will celebrate its 60th anniversary by sponsoring an international conference themed Historical Education in Asia: Issues and Challenges on August 27-29, 2015 at the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines.

Historical education, a broad field of research and learning which includes the teaching of history, harnessing historical thinking skills, training in historiography and dissemination of historical knowledge should be given priority in this fast changing world. In the age of globalization and with the ASEAN integration in 2015, historical education both in the local and regional levels require a convergence of ideas from historians, teachers, researchers and various practitioners related to the field of history.

In this regard, we would like to invite your school’s history/social science educators to attend this conference. Deadline for pre-registration (with discount) is on June 30, 2015.

Please take note that there will be a short welcome program in the afternoon of August 26 at the UST Civil Law lobby for early registration and distribution of conference kit. Also we would like to encourage conference participants to wear Filipiniana on August 27 for the opening ceremonies.

The Philippine Historical Association is a professional and honor association of historians, history teachers and researchers in the Philippines, founded in 1955 by a group of historians that include Encarnacion Alzona, Gabriel Fabella, Gregorio Zaide, Nicolas Zafra, Celedonio Resurreccion, Teodoro Agoncillo, Esteban de Ocampo and Fr. Horacio dela Costa. A non-stocknon-profitnon-sectarian and non-partisan organization, its main objective is to promote and propagate historical knowledge and studies through conferences, training programs and scholarly publications. It is affiliated with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Philippine Social Science Council.

CONFERENCE THEME: “HISTORICAL EDUCATION IN ASIA: ISSUES AND CHALLENGES”.

In our time, historical education should be viewed in various levels and institutions of our society. From the individual to institutions, historical knowledge is practical not only to preserve identity in this generation but to promote unity in diversity. Promoting historical education enhances opportunities towards a better future of Asian nations. The international conference will provide venue for discussion on new historical studies, research, writing and teaching methods. In particular, the said international conference shall develop among the participants  critical and deep understanding of new studies and researches on historical education, including strategies and methods in doing research, teaching and propagating historical, cultural and heritage studies.

PHA PRESIDENT CALAIRO GUIDED PH PRESIDENT NOYNOY AQUINO THROUGH THE NEW AGUINALDO MUSEUM

Emmanuel Franco Calairo, President of the Philippine Historical Association and foremost Cavite historian, guided H.E. B.S. Aquino, III, President of the Republic of the Philippines through the new Museo ni Emilio Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite last 20 March 2015. Joining him in guiding the president was Chairperson Ma. Serena Diokno of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and Mr. Angelo Jarin Aguinaldo, curator of the Aguinaldo Shrine and direct great grandson of President Aguinaldo.
