Recently, a partylist congressman
filed a bill to create a commission to rename the Philippines because our
nation's name came from our colonizers. This happened as people debated
historical facts concerning the birth of the Nation as we celebrated Independence
Day. In light of this, the Philippine Historical Association, in partnership
with the Philippine Historical Association, Order of the Knights of Rizal -
Sucesos Chapter and Gateway Gallery will hold its annual Independence Day
Colloquium with the theme "Controversial Issues: On the Birth and Name of
the Nation."
Dr. Emmanuel Calairo, president of
the association, will speak on the topic "Paglilinaw sa ilang tala sa araw
ng kalayaan noong ika-12 ng Hunyo 1898" which will also deal on the other
contesting dates of Philippine Independence while Prof. Xiao Chua, P.R.O. of
the association, will talk about "The Myth of the First Eight Provinces
(or why we don't need a ninth ray) and other issues on the Sun of the flag and
the name of the Nation." However, in her talk "Memory and Event as
History," Dr. Milagros Guerrero, past president, will argue that the Cry
of the Revolution in 1986 is the real birthday of the Nation and will also talk
about the relevance of the issue in today's current events. Dr. Ma. Luisa
Camagay, editor of the Historical Bulletin, will sum up the forum's important
points and will give her reaction. The forum will be moderated by Prof.
Jonathan Balsamo, secretary.
The colloquium will be held on 24
June 2017, Saturday, 9:00 am-12:00 nn at the Gateway Gallery, Gateway Mall,
Cubao, Quezon City. No registration fee although guests are requested to donate
old history books for the Gateway Gallery's reading corner. First come, first
served.
