Coffee table book chronicles Ateneo’s 150-year history
Behind the glory of the blue and the white, Fabilioh, and the academic prestige attached to the name, the Ateneo de Manila has a rich history that goes back all the way to 1859, when the university we know today was the public primary school Escuela Municipal de Manila, established and run by ten Jesuit priests and a Jesuit brother.
The years that followed have included at least two wars, a massive relocation to the vast Loyola Heights area, several changes in government administration, countless national struggles, and milestones in the academe, the arts, and athletics. Yet, through all these, the Ateneo stayed true to its mission of educating generations of men for others, leaders and visionaries -- Lux In Domino (Light in the Lord) -- who have figured in many ways in the building of our nation.
All these inspiring struggles and triumphs are chronicled in the coffee table book, 150 The Ateneo Way. Ateneo’s rich history, based on official documents and personal journals and accounts from the Jesuit archives, is shared through the colorful narrative written by history professor and archivist of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus, Fr. Jose S. Arcilla, S.J., and edited by Alya Honasan and Krip Yuson. The stories are made even more alive by the priceless and mostly never-been-publicly-released photos from the university archives and the collections of Ateneo alumni, some of whom will be honored as they join in the coming Sesquicentennial festivities.
