HISTORY COMES ALIVE WITH AMBETH OCAMPO

Ayala Museum is known as both an art and history museum. The permanent exhibitions such as The Diorama Experience, the maritime vessels, and the Crossroads of Civlizations exhibitions on the fourth floor galleries where permanent displays on pre-colonial gold, 18th to 19th-century Philippine costumes and trade vessels from China and Southeast Asia are complemented by exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, as well as by traveling exhibitions from various countries.

Beginning June to September, Ayala Museum will launch a new education program, History Comes Alive with Ambeth Ocampo. This lecture series will begin on June 26 and will continue until September. Chair of the National Historical Institute, Ambeth Ocampo presents history with a combination of wit and rigorous research, making him the most popular and widely-read historian today.

The first lecture on June 26 will focus on pre-colonial Philippine Society to be held at Ground Floor Lobby of Ayala Museum at 10:30AM. The inaugural presentation will be followed by: a presentation on July 24 at 3:00PM on the Philippine-American War, a presentation on August 14 at 3:00PM on the Malolos Congress, and a September 18 presentation on the Katipunan at 3:00PM.

Lumaganap naman ang stereotype kay Andres Bonifacio bilang walang pinag-aralan, walang kakayahan, mapusok, at tinawag ang sarili na hari. Ang mga ito ay paninirang ikinalat ng mga kalaban niya noong siya ay nabubuhay pa. Bilang karagdagan sa talastasan ukol dito, nilinaw ng panayam ni Dr. Guerrero ang papel ni Bonifacio bilang pinuno ng Himagsikan, lalo na ang kanyang pagkakahalal sa Kataas-taasang Sanggunian bilang unang pangulo ng Rebolusyunaryong Pamahalaan noong 24 Agosto 1896 sa isang pulong sa bahay ni Tandang Sora sa Sitio Gulod, Barrio Banlat, Kalookan. Bilang supremo, nilinaw ni Dr. Guerrero:

As commander-in-chief, Bonifacio supervised the planning of military strategies and the preparation of orders, manifests and decrees, adjudicated offenses against the nation, as well as mediated in political disputes. He directed generals and positioned troops in the fronts. On the basis of command responsibility, all victories and defeats all over the archipelago during his term of office should be attributed to Bonifacio.

The claim by some historians that “Bonifacio lost all his battles” is RIDICULOUS.

PROP. MILAGROS C. GUERRERO, Ph.D. ay retiradong propesor ng Departamento ng Kasaysayan, Unibersidad ng Pilipinas Diliman. Naging Tagapangulo ng nasabing departamento at dating Pangulo ng Philippine Historical Association. Natamo niya ang kanyang doktorado sa Kasaysayan mula sa University of Michigan at ang kanyang BA at MA sa UP Diliman. Kinikilalang eksperto sa Kasaysayang Panlipunan, Kasaysayan ng Himagsikan at ni Andres Bonifacio at Kasaysayan ng Digmaang Pasipiko sa Pilipinas, na naging mga paksa ng kanyang mga lathalain.

Noong 26 Nobyembre 2008, bilang pagdiriwang sa anibersaryo ng kapanganakan ni Andres Bonifacio, Ama ng Himagsikang Pilipino, inipon ng UP Lipunang Pangkasaysayan, sa ilalim ng pangulo nito na si Ayshia F. Kunting, sa isang sampaksaan sa Faculty Center ng Unibersidad ng Pilipinas Diliman ang ilang iskolar na may mga bagong saliksik na nagbigay linaw sa papel at katauhan ng Supremo ng Katipunan sa nakaraang dalawang dekada.

Bilang paggunita ng anibersaryo ng Himagsikan sa Agosto at pagdiriwang ng kaarawan ni Bonifacio sa Nobyembre, dalawa sa mga paham na ito ay aanyayahan ng DLSU Departamento ng Kasaysayan sa Unibersidad ng De La Salle Maynila upang magbigay ng mga lektura ukol sa kanilang mga saliksik at nang mapakinabangan ng mga estudyanteng Lasalyano ang mga bagong pananaw na ito, mabalanse ang kanilang mga kaalaman tungo sa pagsasaliksik ng katotohanan ukol sa isa sa mga bayani ng ating bansa.

Nitong nakaraang 12 Agosto 2009, idinaos ang unang lektura ng serye na ibinahagi ni Dr. Zeus A. Salazar, retiradong propesor ng UP Departamento ng Kasaysayan, ukol sa paksang “Andres Bonifacio bilang Punong Militar.”

AMBETH OCAMPO LECTURES AT AYALA MUSEUM ON : CHASTITY COVERS, PENIS IMPLEMENTS, AND THE BOXER CODEX: EXPLORING PHILIPPINE PRE-HISTORY


The complete story of the Philippines and the Filipinos remains to be written. Since it is a long and complex story that depends on written records, how do we tackle pre-history? Jose Rizal took up the challenge when he annotated Antonio de Morga?s ?Sucesos de las islas Filipinas? (1609) and published a new edition in 1890 because he believed that ?to know the destiny of a nation, one has to open the book of her past?.

Today we have clues into Philippine pre-history from archeological artifacts supplemented by our earliest written records. In an illustrated lecture Ambeth Ocampo will introduce the collections of the Ayala Museum to explore how and why our past has been re-presented in the continuing search for that elusive thing we call national identity.

Ambeth Ocampo writes a widely-read editorial page column on history for the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and teaches at the Ateneo de Manila University. He is Chairman of the National Historical Institute.

The lecture will be held on November 28 at the Ayala Museum Ground Floor Lobby. The same lecture will be delivered twice: one at 1030AM and another at 130PM. Participation in the lecture is Php200 for students and Ayala Museum members and Php300 for regular adults. The price includes admission to all galleries of the museum.
